Media Law Forum Conducts Digital Rights and Online Safety Workshop in Kandy

The Media Law Forum successfully conducted a Sinhala-language workshop on 19 June 2026 in Kandy, bringing together journalists and legal professionals to strengthen understanding of digital rights, online safety, and media literacy in an increasingly complex digital environment.

The workshop focused on fostering collaboration between media practitioners and lawyers to address emerging challenges in the digital era, including digital safety, responsible communication, and ethical engagement in online spaces. Participants explored how these principles can contribute to strengthening public trust, safeguarding freedom of expression, and upholding media integrity.

During the session, participants examined the growing risks posed by false and misleading information and discussed practical approaches to identifying, mitigating, and responding to harmful online content. The discussions also highlighted the critical role of media and legal professionals in promoting a safe, accountable, and transparent digital ecosystem.

The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Viranjana Herath (AAL), veteran journalist Shan Wijetunga and digital safety consultant Haritha Dahanayake, who shared their expertise and insights on navigating contemporary digital challenges. Through interactive discussions, case studies, and experience-sharing sessions, participants reflected on real-world information challenges and explored effective strategies for responsible digital engagement.

By the conclusion of the workshop, participants had enhanced their knowledge of digital rights and online safety, gained practical tools to address information-related challenges, and strengthened professional networks to support collaborative action in the digital sphere.

This initiative was supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Sri Lanka. The Media Law Forum extends its sincere appreciation to the resource persons and participants for their valuable contributions in making the workshop a success.
