Media Law Forum Strengthens Digital Rights Awareness Through Capacity-Building Programme in Kurunegala

The Media Law Forum organized a Sinhala-language workshop in Kurunegala on 20 June 2026, bringing together journalists and legal professionals for a day of learning, discussion, and collaboration on digital rights, online safety, and responsible engagement in digital spaces.

The programme was designed to enhance participants’ understanding of the opportunities and challenges presented by today’s rapidly evolving information landscape. Discussions focused on the importance of promoting ethical communication practices, protecting digital rights, and building resilience against online harms while maintaining freedom of expression and access to information.

Participants explored the impact of misinformation and disinformation on society and examined practical strategies for identifying unreliable content, verifying information, and responding effectively to emerging digital threats. The workshop also highlighted the growing importance of cooperation between media practitioners and legal professionals in safeguarding a secure, inclusive, and accountable online environment.

The sessions were led by Dr. Viranjana Herath (Attorney-at-Law), veteran journalist Shan Wijetunga, and digital safety consultant Haritha Dahanayake, who shared valuable insights drawn from their professional experience. Through interactive presentations, group discussions, and real-world case studies, participants exchanged perspectives and explored solutions to contemporary digital challenges.

The workshop provided a valuable platform for networking and knowledge-sharing, enabling participants to strengthen their professional connections while gaining practical skills to navigate the evolving digital landscape with confidence and responsibility.
