Media Law Forum Brings Journalists and Lawyers Together for Digital Rights Programme in Anuradhapura

The Media Law Forum held a Sinhala-language Digital Rights and Online Safety Programme in Anuradhapura on 21 June 2026, bringing together journalists and legal professionals to discuss emerging challenges in the digital landscape and explore collaborative approaches to promoting a safer and more informed online environment.

As digital technologies continue to reshape the way information is created, shared, and consumed, the programme provided participants with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of digital rights, media literacy, and online safety. Particular attention was given to the importance of responsible communication, ethical conduct in digital spaces, and the protection of fundamental freedoms in the online sphere.

Throughout the programme, participants examined the growing influence of misinformation, disinformation, and other forms of harmful content on public discourse. Interactive discussions focused on practical tools and strategies for identifying misleading information, strengthening verification practices, and enhancing public resilience against information-related threats.

The sessions were facilitated by Dr. Viranjana Herath (Attorney-at-Law), veteran journalist Shan Wijetunga, and digital safety consultant Haritha Dahanayake, who shared their expertise on navigating the opportunities and risks associated with the modern digital environment. Through case studies, group discussions, and experience-sharing sessions, participants exchanged ideas and reflected on the evolving responsibilities of media and legal professionals in the digital age.

The programme also encouraged greater cooperation between journalists and lawyers, recognizing the important role both professions play in promoting accountability, protecting rights, and strengthening public trust in information ecosystems.

By the end of the event, participants had gained valuable insights, practical knowledge, and stronger professional networks to support their ongoing efforts in advancing digital literacy, online safety, and responsible digital engagement.

This programme was organized with the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Sri Lanka. The Media Law Forum expresses its gratitude to the resource persons and participants for their active engagement and valuable contributions to the success of the event.
