Media Law Forum Strengthens Digital Rights Awareness Among Journalists and Lawyers in Matara

Media Law Forum Conducts Digital Rights  Awareness Workshop in Matara with Strong Participation from Lawyers

The Media Law Forum (MLF) conducted a Sinhala-language workshop on digital rights, online safety, and responsible digital engagement in Matara on 23 October 2026, bringing together journalists and legal professionals for an engaging day of learning and collaboration.

The programme saw the active participation of lawyers alongside media practitioners, highlighting the growing importance of legal professionals in addressing digital rights challenges, online harms, and emerging issues related to freedom of expression.

The workshop focused on identifying misinformation and disinformation, verifying online content, promoting responsible digital communication, and understanding the legal and ethical challenges of the rapidly changing digital environment.

The sessions were led by Dr. Viranjana Herath, Attorney-at-Law and Media Consultant; Prabodha Rathnayaka, Attorney-at-Law; and Haritha Dahanayake, Digital Safety Consultant. Through practical examples, interactive discussions, and professional insights, participants explored ways to respond to digital threats while protecting fundamental rights.

The strong engagement of lawyers and journalists created an important space for knowledge-sharing and strengthened the potential for collaboration between the media and legal sectors.

The workshop was conducted with the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Sri Lanka, as part of MLF’s ongoing efforts to promote digital rights awareness and a safer, more accountable online environment.
