Strengthening Digital Rights and Awareness: Media Law Forum Discusses Election Reporting in the Digital Era in Anuradhapura

The Media Law Forum conducted an information session on “Election Reporting in the Digital Era” on Friday, 23 January 2026, in Anuradhapura, with a focus on strengthening digital rights, digital awareness, and responsible journalism. The session was held in Sinhala for journalists from the region and addressed the legal and ethical challenges of election reporting in Sri Lanka’s rapidly evolving digital media landscape.

The programme examined key developments, including the revised Election Media Guidelines (2025), which place increased emphasis on digital and social media content, as well as campaign finance regulations related to online political advertising. Participants were also briefed on information accuracy standards, the responsible use of generative artificial intelligence in election campaigns, and the growing importance of digital literacy in safeguarding democratic discourse.

Special attention was given to digital rights and online safety laws, including legal measures to counter hate speech, misinformation, and disinformation. These discussions highlighted the expanding legal responsibilities of media professionals and the critical role journalists play in protecting the public’s right to accurate information in the digital era.

The session was facilitated by Dr. Viranjana Herath, along with other resource persons, who shared insights on media law, regulatory frameworks, and best practices for ethical election reporting. Discussions underscored the importance of journalistic integrity, impartiality, fact-based reporting, and digital awareness in maintaining transparency and public trust in electoral processes.

Co-funded by the European Union and implemented in partnership with Democracy Reporting International (DRI) and Factum, the programme forms part of the Media Law Forum’s ongoing efforts to enhance digital rights awareness, strengthen journalists’ legal knowledge, and promote democratic values across Sri Lanka’s regions.
