Strengthening UVA Provincial Media Actors: Enhancing Election Reporting in the Digital Age

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote ethical journalism and media accountability, the Media Law Forum conducted a focused information session in Badulla on June 3, 2025, targeting media professionals from the Uva Province. The session aimed to build capacity in election reporting in the digital era, providing essential knowledge and tools to support independent and accurate journalism at the provincial level.

Participants included Sinhala and Tamil broadcasters from Uva Community Radio, and provincial reporters from across the region. The diverse mix of media actors ensured that the discussions reflected both linguistic and regional perspectives critical to inclusive and ethical news reporting.

Expert facilitators from the Media Law Forum led sessions on the core principles of responsible journalism, particularly in the context of election coverage. Topics included best practices for monitoring campaign finance and political advertising on social media, and how to apply generative AI responsibly in digital newsrooms. Emphasis was placed on maintaining credibility, transparency, and public trust, even as media formats and technologies rapidly evolve.

This initiative was supported by the European Union, in collaboration with Democracy Reporting International (DRI) and Factum, reinforcing the Media Law Forum’s broader mission to uphold digital media integrity and strengthen democratic discourse throughout Sri Lanka.
