The Media Law Forum (MLF) is pleased to highlight the participation of Dr. Viranjana Herath, Chairperson and Senior Legal Consultant of MLF, at Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week 2026 – South Asia, convened by the UNESCO Regional Office for South Asia at UNESCO House, New Delhi, on 26–27 October 2026.
Held under the theme “We All Play a Part – Media and Information Literacy for the People,” the regional event brought together experts and practitioners to discuss the evolving challenges of media and information literacy in an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence (AI). The programme also featured the launch of UNESCO’s new MIL and AI module.
Dr. Herath joined the panel discussion titled “Youth, AI and the Future of Information,” alongside Chandrabhanu Pattanayak, Urvashi Kapoor and Dovan Rai. The session, moderated by Ma’aly Hazzaz, UNESCO’s Regional Advisor for Communication and Information in South Asia, examined the implications of AI for young people, information integrity and the future of media literacy.
The discussion underscored the importance of a rights-based approach to media and information literacy, recognising that addressing disinformation requires shared responsibility among individuals, governments and digital platforms. It also highlighted the need to strengthen public resilience to misleading information while protecting freedom of expression and other fundamental rights.
The Media Law Forum welcomes this important regional dialogue and the continued focus on promoting media and information literacy, responsible AI engagement, and the protection of digital rights across South Asia.
